#13 When it comes to building a LM business, are you interested or committed?

The Long-Term Vision: LM100

LM100 – Help 100 Lifestyle Medicine practitioners turn their passion into a living. I want y’all to make $, doing meaningful work, that you love.

The First Step: LM Starter

As a stepping stone, I’m building LM Starter.

It will help you craft your first offer and set up the tedious stuff (newsletters, social media, business registrations, legal and insurance etc.).

Today’s focus: Exploring Your WHY

Why Are You Reading This?

You probably want to do something more or different with your Lifestyle Medicine expertise.

  • Shift most of your consultations into LM-focused work
  • Start your own LM telehealth business
  • Build an online LM brand or business
  • Launch a podcast and teach the world about Lifestyle Medicine
  • Run workshops or lead a community
  • Or simply do something that feels more meaningful with your career

Whatever it is, you want change.

Do You Have to Change or Want to Change?

Some people HAVE to change:

  • You lost your job and need money yesterday
  • You hate your current job and can’t imagine doing it another day
  • A loved one dies from a preventable cause and now you having a burning purpose

Some people WANT to change:

  • You see a gap in healthcare and want to offer something better (because you know it exists)
  • You’ve been doing the same thing for years and you don’t mind it but you feel called to something more

Here’s the thing about change

Change, and working for it, is hard.

This hardness will test you.

It will test whether you are committed or interested.

  • If you’re committed, you’ll find a way.
  • If you’re just interested, when things get hard, you’ll find an excuse.

My Story: From Cluck Cluck to Commitment

I once tried to launch a personal training business. I had a logo, a website, and even branded “Inch by Inch Lifestyle” T-shirts. I went door to door trying to find clients to help.  I made $70, spent $100s, and heard “I’m having dinner” just before I got a door slammed in my face.

Then, my amazing wife got an opportunity to move to Tasmania for 3 months for work. I was allowed to join her! I felt relief that I could go with her and give up on the business.

I wasn’t committed. I was interested.

In a bacon and egg breakfast, what’s the difference between the chicken and the pig? The chicken is involved. The pig is committed.

Back then, I was clucking. Fast forward to 2025 — I’m the pig. 🐷

The reason?

Now I have a strong WHY.

Your WHY: The Key to Commitment

What’s Your WHY?
Why is this important to you?

A powerful tool to explore this is the 7 Whys exercise (aka the “7 Levels Deep” exercise).

How the 7 Whys Exercise Works

  1. Start with a goal or outcome
  2. Ask “Why?”
  3. Answer it
  4. Then ask “Why?” again based on that answer
  5. Repeat 7+ times to uncover your core motivation

Your first WHY will be superficial.

Your 7th (or deeper) WHY may reveal something worth committing to.

My 7 Whys for LM 100 (Yes, my example has 8)

Initial Goal: Help 100 Lifestyle Medicine Practitioners Turn Their Passion into a Living

  1. Why is that important? Because it’s difficult and meaningful. There’s no downside because even if I ‘fail’, I’ll learn and meet great people. If it works out, I get to ‘help the helper’ reach their true fans and I get paid for it.
  2. Why is that important? Because I love to experience my professional life through difficult and meaningful projects. The right project will lead to a journey full of learning, setbacks (i.e. learnings), and amazing humans.
  3. Why is that important? Because I spent my 20s trying a bit of everything. Now in my 30s, I want to go deeper on fewer things.
  4. Why is that important? Because depth provides the opportunity for something profound. I will become a version of myself that I wouldn’t otherwise become.
  5. Why is that important? Life is not getting easier, I need to get better. I need to become stronger for what lies ahead — ageing parents, death and sickness, adversity. Business is my low-stakes training ground. It helps to build me into the type of person that can handle anything.
  6. Why is that important? I want to know at the end of my life that I pursued my highest potential and gave it everything — for myself, my loved ones, and the world.
  7. Why is that important? Improving myself and channelling this into the service of others is a beautiful way to live life.
  8. Why is that important? Life is precious and there is so much to explore, externally and more importantly, internally. This exploration and constant development is the meaning of my life.

I went from LM 100 as a meaningful and difficult project to the meaning of life 🙂

Commitment vs The Size Of Your Dreams

You can achieve things if you’re interested — but the bigger the dream, the more commitment it demands.

You’ll know whether you’re committed not by what you say, but by what you do when it gets hard.
