I had the same conversation with 4 my of Lifestyle Medicine business clients.
So, I decided to answer the question:

What do I write about?
Â
I have written well over 100 articles, who knows how many posts on Linkedin, and a 400+ page book called Do Happy.
I should be running out of ideas, right?
Nope.
I am bursting with ideas.
To be honest, this happened by accident.
But I don’t want you to leave it chance so I reverse engineered my writing process.
These 3 principles will help you get focussed and unlock endless content ideas.
Say goodbye to staring at blank screens or blank pieces of paper.
1) Decide to write regularly.
What’s regularly?
If it’s long form (e.g. newsletter), weekly is great.
If it’s short form (e.g. social media posting), daily or at least a few times a week is great.
Once you decide, don’t make the decision again.
This creates a forcing function in your mind that asks, “What can I write about today?”
The question is NOT, “Can IÂ write something today?”.
It is NOT, “Should I write something today?”
It is, “What can I write about today?”
It assumes (rightly), that you will write something.
Â
As healthcare professionals, we are lucky. Our patients give us an endless stream of content ideas. Anything that’s discussed during a consult is by definition, important enough to discuss. It would also make for great content (ensuring privacy and confidentiality of course).
The decision to write regularly will prime your brain to look for content ideas.
Because your brain is looking for ideas, it will see them…everywhere.
2) Write to one person
This will help focus your writing and marketing.

If you write to everyone, you write to no one.
If you write to one person, you write to that person and anyone who is similar (which is likely a lot of people). [Thanks Dan Koe for clarifying this for me].
Think of one person – a patient, a client.
This helps you get focussed.
If you are still stuck, a powerful person to write to is yourself.
Another powerful person is the person you once were.
This makes your writing not only about marketing. It becomes a journey of self inquiry, self discovery, and personal development.
This means that even if no one reads it, you still win.
Cool, you made the decision to write regularly and now you have someone you are writing to.
Now what?
3) Write about the 6 P’s
- Pain – the painful problems that the person is struggling with, and its negative implications.
- Promises – the benefit or outcome of solving their problem, and its positive implications.
- Pitfalls – the common mistakes that they may make along the way.
- Potholes – the common roadblocks, barriers, and challenges that they may encounter along the way.
- Path – how they can get from where they are to where they want to be (the solution to their problem).
- Personal – sharing your story, so the reader can connect with you, before they connect with what you have to offer.This is my favourite because I just share my personal development journey (what I am working on, what I am learning, my routines, my reflections on the world and myself etc.). It like writing in my diary and letting it to double as my marketing.
Example:
1) Who am I writing to?
Mary – 45 years old and menopausal.
*Mary doesn’t need to know.
2) 6 P’s
Pain + negative implications:
- Can’t sleep –> Tired and barely functional during the day
- Hot flushes –> Having to leave in the middle of work meetings
- Moody —> “Every time my husband opens his mouth I want to divorce him”
- Brain fog –> I walk into rooms and can’t remember why I am there
- Painful sex –> Avoid sex at all costs and deal with a frustrated hubby
Promises + positive implications:
- A full night’s sleep –> Getting the old ‘me’ back
- Being present with the kids –> Feeling like I am a good parent
- Energetic –> Saying “Yes” to social commitments and actually meaning it
- No more vaginal dryness –> A great sex life and pain-free urination
- Relief from symptoms –> Feel control of their bodies (and their lives) again
Pitfalls:
- Women accepting things as they are and not seeking help
- Women not realising that a lot of the symptoms of menopause have a solution
Potholes:
- The symptoms are often missed or,
- They receive hormone replacement but that’s it, with no mention of Lifestyle Medicine benefits
Path:
- MHT
- CBT
- Lifestyle Medicine approach
Personal:
- Share your own experience with menopause and how it shifted your perspectives
- Share what you have learnt and what you are learning (this can be specific to your field of interest or general)
The best thing about the personal stuff is that it can be about whatever you want. It’s an opportunity to show your uniqueness, your quirks, your amazingness.
—> If you go for a swim in the ocean before work, talk about it.
—> If you play Dungeons and Dragons, tell us.
—> If you moonlight as a kid’s magician, share some tricks.
Boom!
This could easily be a year’s worth of content.
