I had back to back business coaching sessions with 2 Lifestyle Medicine practitioners. We had the exact same conversation.
–> Both GPs.
–> Both working 4 days a week, doing traditional GP work.
–> Both looking to start and grow a LM business on the side (and then make that the main thing).
–> Both have 5 hours a week to dedicate to building the LM business.
Here are 2 things to consider:
1) 5 hours a week is not that much time.
There are people who have 40 hours a week to work on their business and they still struggle.
5 hours is not that much. Therefore, how you use it becomes crucial.
2) 5 hours a week becomes a useful creative constraint.
The type of business you build if you had 40 hours a week, is different to the one you build if you have 5 hours a week.
5 hours forces you to think outside the box.
It will make you hyper focussed. There is no time or energy to be watching YouTube videos or scrolling social media.
This precious 5 hours is for deep work only.
No ‘busy’ work just so you can feel like you are doing something.
Only work that well, works 🙂
Well, what should I actually focus on during these 5 hours?
The answer may surprise you.
The temptation is to work on your craft. Get another qualification, do another course, attend a workshop.
This is useful, if the aim is to upskill.
It’s not useful, if the aim is to build and grow your business.
If you have 5 hours a week to build and grow your business, focus on one thing – marketing.
When you are starting out, no one knows that you, or what you offer, exists.
It doesn’t matter how good you are.
It doesn’t matter if you offer a world-class service.
If no-one knows you, it’s game over.
No patients –> No money –> No business –> 🙁
Here’s what I am proposing:
If you spend 5 hours a week, every week, for 1 year marketing your business, you would have all the patients you need to run a financially viable business.
Sure, most things are out of our control.
All we can do is behave in a way that stacks the odds in our favour.
When you set goals, you want to act in a way that would make not achieving your goal a surprise.
5 hours a week.
Every week.
For 1 whole year!
That’s 5 X 52 = 260 hours of marketing.
If you not fully booked with LM patients by the end of this year, that would be surprising to me 🙂
If you LOVED this, SHARE it with another LM human you care about.
Good luck!
Much love to you and of course, myself.
